Avery Ocotillo
"Avery Ocotillo" by Josette Urso
"...as thwarted energy subsides into a shudder..."

as specific memory gives way to vague malaise
and blame returns upon the blamer,

as the outline of a face recedes
into the myriad evasions
that a wounded party takes,

as the dreamer's single love
extends forever into hatred,

so the dreamer's life remains
the life of one shadow,
thrown down
when he finally stood in light.

and she laughs
and she plays
among less faithful
more interesting men,

the sun has gone away
he has turned away
from the sun,

his tested flesh
has gone across the sky,
sky opened up its whiteness
cut by her sinking fire,

and in the pink evening
she falls to other towns
and in the gray
when evening becomes night

she is taken to California,
she rises in Paris or London,
she travels Africa

with men who are more capable
more interesting men.
