"Cactus Story I" by Josette Urso

Damn the Iambic, Full Speed Ahead
-
We play croquette with marbles on the lawn
by moonlight glazed and glassy as our eyes
and lose the things in iridescent grass
damn
our dancing games on summer nights
amid the quiet clicking of the glass
and louder chirps of crickets interspersed
with an occasional giggle
when sweet champagne alleviates the heat
we donate blood to black-flies all the while
in light blue cotton skirt Amanda cries
"my arms are bad enough but not my legs
I'm going inside"
and leaves me there with only thirteen lines.
